Did you purchase a new home this year? Don't forget about your Homestead and Mortgage Tax exemptions!
It's that time of year when life gets busy with the upcoming holidays. If you purchased a home this year, its good to put checking tax exemptions on your radar. Make sure you have filed your homestead and mortgage exemptions. Please double check online, call the auditor, or go to your county courthouse to get a receipt for proof your exemptions were filed.
Your homestead exemption was filed at closing by the title company, but it’s imperative you double check everyone did their job correctly. Verify it is in place or your taxes will double.
If you haven’t filed your mortgage exemption, you can do that online (depending on the county) or go to your county’s courthouse to file. These must be done by December 31, 2019 to keep your taxes at the lower amount.
Don't get stuck paying double taxes. Do your due diligence now and save yourself the hassle now before the season is in full swing.
